COVID-19 — Pre-existing gender discrimination provides fertile ground for increased inequality, to the detriment of food security and nutrition
Evidence from around the world shows that women are disproportionately affected by economic shocks and crises. The COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. Women are hard hit as individuals and in their ability to fulfil their role in terms of contribution to the food security and nutrition of their family, while tens of millions of poor people are at risk of falling into food insecurity as a result of COVID-19.
In March 2020, the Bureau of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) along with members of its (ad hoc) Advisory Group convened a virtual video conference to discuss COVID-19 and its impacts on food security and nutrition. The discussion utilized the interim Issues Paper on the Impacts of COVID-19 on Food Security and Nutrition by the CFS High-Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) along with expert briefings from the three UN Rome-based Agencies, the World Health Organization, and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the 2021 Food Systems Summit.

Addressing the challenges that the world faces to eliminate hunger and all forms of malnutrition is a complex, multi-faceted issue that requires a holistic approach, with multiple partners involved in finding workable solutions. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development also encourages the use of partnerships as one of the ways to implement the ambitious Agenda, as outlined in SDG 17, which encourages “the global partnership for sustainable development, complemented by the use of multi-stakeholder partnerships” (MSPs).
